Gardenia jasminoides
A beautiful houseplant grown for its rich green glossy leaves and highly scented flowers. The perfume from these plants is exquisite and will fill your home with a beautiful fragrance. An evergreen shrub with white or creamy-white flowers, the flowers are typically double or semi-double, with overlapping petals which give a rose-like appearance. The flowering period is usually summer and autumn.
Gardenia jasminoides can be quite challenging to grow, they prefer an even temperature, good light and careful watering. Water using soft water or room temperature rain water and keep the soil moist, being careful not to over water. Reduce watering over winter without allowing the soil to dry out.
Thrives in a humid environment, mist the leaves regularly except when in flower and place on a tray of damp pebbles. Regular feeding with a balanced, acidic fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants can help promote healthy growth and vibrant flowers. Pruning can be done after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead or damaged branches.
