Cabbage collars are a simple, efficient and non-chemical way to protect cabbages and brassicas from cabbage root fly.
Cabbage root fly are a serious threat for spring, summer and autumn greens such as cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and broccoli. They weaken plants and reduce the strength of the crop. The adult fly lays eggs which become maggots, it is the maggots that cause the damage to the plant as they burrow into the stem and roots to eat. Cabbage collars obstruct the adult fly from laying eggs at the base of the plant, preventing an infestation of maggots.
Once you have planted your brassicas slide a collar around the stem, as the plant grows and the stem thickens, the cabbage collar will open to prevent restricted growth.
