Lemon Balm 9cm
Lemon Balm, also known as Melissa officinalis, is a herbaceous perennial plant that is part of the mint family. It is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region but is widely cultivated throughout the world, including in the UK. The plant has a bushy habit and can grow up to 70 cm tall, with a spread of up to 90 cm.
Lemon Balm has fragrant leaves that are ovate in shape and a bright green colour. The leaves have a lemon scent when crushed, which is where the plant gets its common name. Lemon Balm blooms in the summer with small white or yellow flowers that are attractive to bees and other pollinators.
It is commonly used to make tea and can also used in cooking, particularly in Mediterranean cuisine, to add a lemony flavour to dishes. In the garden, Lemon Balm is an attractive and useful herb that can be grown in containers or planted directly in the ground. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil.
